Rubber Band Ligation for Haemorrhoids

Rubber band ligation is a non-surgical haemorrhoid treatment that can be performed in a clinic setting without hospitalisation or anaesthesia, and is usually painless.

How Is It Performed?

During the procedure, haemorrhoidal tissue is grasped with a special device and a small rubber band is placed over it. This band cuts off the blood supply to the tissue; within 7–10 days, the tissue dries up and falls off.

Who Is It Suitable For?

It is effective for Grade I, II and selected Grade III internal haemorrhoids. It is not applied to external haemorrhoids.

Advantages

No anaesthesia required, the procedure is completed in 5–10 minutes, the patient can return to normal activities the same day, it can be repeated and has a low complication rate.

Possible Complications

Mild bleeding, pain or discomfort, bleeding when the band falls off, and rarely infection may occur.
