Gallstones: Do They Cause Pain? Is There a Non-Surgical Solution?

Gallstones are solid particles that form in the gallbladder and can cause various effects on the digestive system.

Do All Gallstones Cause Pain?

No. Many people can live for years without knowing they have gallstones (asymptomatic stones). When a stone becomes lodged in the outlet duct of the gallbladder, severe, cramp-like pain known as biliary colic occurs.

Symptoms of Biliary Colic

Sudden and severe pain starting in the right upper abdomen or epigastric region, which may radiate to the back or right shoulder; nausea, vomiting and sweating may accompany it. Attacks generally occur after fatty meals.

Is Non-Surgical Treatment Possible?

Small cholesterol stones can be dissolved with ursodeoxycholic acid; however, this is a lengthy process and the risk of stone recurrence is high. Shock wave therapy (ESWL) can be applied in limited cases. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the gold standard in symptomatic cases.
